The Henry Surtees Foundation will sponsor the event organised by London Play which will see children and companies from Canary Wharf create vehicles to race.

Motor racing legend John Surtees OBE will be swapping the driving seat for the toolbox as he helps youngsters at Mudchute farm create go karts from scratch.

His charity, the Henry Surtees Foundation is sponsoring London Play’s Go Kart Build and Race 2015 which will see about 150 youngsters descend on the Isle of Dogs on Friday, August 7. Working in teams of 10 they will create a non-motorised kart from wood, wheels and metal in just four hours – before putting them to the test in a race challenge.

London Play project manager Catherine Togut said the event targeted those in deprived areas while the 2013 task proved a huge success.

“The kids had a fantastic time and they had never experienced anything like it before,” she said. “It was a great day. The children wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to learn these skills and it can be inspiration for the future."
