Sutton

Council-led approach

How was the project initiated?

Local publicity about the Home Zones for London (HZfL) project generated interest from Sutton Play Network and a local resident. The approach undertaken by the HZfL project is to build on resident demand for a home zone, and then gain the support and approval of the local authority and other stakeholders.

Sutton Council are however, taking an innovative approach to the development of home zones in the borough by developing internal guidance and criteria for selecting and prioritising suitable locations. This forms part of the wider Transport for London funded pilot Smarter Travel Sutton scheme which aims to promote sustainable modes of transport in order to reduce pollution and create safer streets.

What are the next steps?

Unfortunately it has not been possible for HZfL to work with interested residents in a specific locality to explore the possibility of a home zone due to conflicting timescales.

Who has been involved?

Home Zones for London (HZfL), Sutton Council.

Key learning points

  • Although HZfL advocates a "bottom-up" route to home zone development, we welcome Sutton Council's proactive approach to the establishment of home zones in the borough.
