Improving play in London
Children in London say they would play out more if they had better places to play. Our key projects aim to ensure that London's children can have the best possible play opportunities, near to their homes.
We support and encourage the play sector, local authorities and communities to create more and better play opportunities in their area. We achieve much of this through project-based development work such as Home Zones for London and Partners for Play.
Local play support agencies, such as play associations and play networks, also work locally with playgrounds, play centres, playworkers and the community, to increase and improve play in the local area. We work with these local play associations to help them achieve the best possible results for children and families in their areas.
A useful precedent has been set with the Argent Group plc planning application for Kings Cross, which emphasises play throughout the public realm. It has now received planning permission, and is one of the biggest inner city redevelopment opportunities in the country. For details see Section 3.4 - The Play and Art Strategy in the Kings Cross Central Public Realm Strategy: download. It may be pertinent to note that the Argent Group plc is an independent property development company wholly owned by the British Telecom pension fund.
London Play strongly supports the London Mayor's intention published in early 2007 to add Supplementary Planning Guidance on Play and Recreation to the London Plan. This will ensure that every new development of housing will have to make space for play. Full details.
