Home Zones for London

Home Zones for London

October 2003 - March 2008

Children and young people want to play in their streets, but are prevented by traffic and safety concerns.

London Play's Home Zones for London project has helped communities to explore ways to transform their streets into safe places for children to play.

Home zones are streets where people can share the road space safely with vehicles, opening up the streets for social use. Home zones are created by slowing and reducing traffic, removing kerbs, redesigning parking spaces, and introducing street lighting, art works, flowers, plants and landscaping, play spaces, seating and communal areas.

The Home Zones for London project has worked with residents, community organisations and local authorities in seven London boroughs. The project, funded by London Councils, has supported communities to explore the potential of home zones to transform their streets, undertake in-depth consultation, and seek funding to develop home zone schemes.
