Funding home zones

Funding home zones

The cost of constructing a retrofit home zone (transformation of an existing street) varies depending on the degree of transformation, but can be in the region of £300,000 upwards. The bulk of funding is normally accessed via the local authority, once they have approved the home zone scheme. Clearly, it is important to involve the relevant local authority when developing home zone proposals. This could include gaining the support of local councillors or establishing links with the transport section of your local authority. Currently, the main source of funding for home zones is via local authority applications to Transport for London's Streets for People programme. However, various funding sources exist that are only open to residents and community groups. Such grants could be used to fund particular elements of the home zone, such as artwork, play equipment or environmental enhancements.
